How to Paint a Mirror Frame Gold

Transforming the look of a mirror by painting its frame gold can give it a touch of elegance and sophistication. Whether you want to update an old mirror or create a custom piece, painting the frame gold is a simple project that can be completed in a few steps.

Materials you'll need:

  • Gold paint (spray paint or regular paint)
  • Primer (optional)
  • Sandpaper (fine-grit)
  • Cleaning solution (such as denatured alcohol)
  • Painter's tape (optional)
  • Paintbrush (if using regular paint)
  • Gloves

Step 1: Prepare the Mirror Frame

Start by thoroughly cleaning the mirror frame with a cleaning solution to remove any dirt or debris. Allow it to dry completely.

If the frame has any chips or scratches, lightly sand them down using fine-grit sandpaper until they're smooth. This will help the primer and paint adhere better.

Step 2: Optional: Apply Primer

Applying a coat of primer to the frame before painting can help create a smoother surface and improve the adhesion of the paint. If you're using spray paint, you can skip this step.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the primer and allow it to dry completely.

Step 3: Protect the Mirror

To prevent the paint from getting on the mirror itself, use painter's tape to cover the edges. If you're careful, you can also use a piece of cardboard or plastic to shield the mirror surface.

Step 4: Paint the Frame

If using spray paint, shake the can well and hold it about six to eight inches from the frame. Apply thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

If using regular paint, use a paintbrush to apply thin, even strokes in the direction of the wood grain. Apply multiple coats until you achieve the desired coverage.

Step 5: Remove Tape and Allow to Dry

Once the paint has dried completely, carefully remove the painter's tape or any other protective coverings. Allow the frame to dry for several hours or overnight before using or reattaching the mirror.

Tips:

  • Use a high-quality gold paint for better coverage and durability.
  • If you want a more distressed look, lightly sand the painted frame after it has dried.
  • To protect the painted frame, apply a clear sealant or topcoat.
  • For larger frames or intricate designs, consider disassembling the frame before painting.
  • Allow ample time for drying between coats to avoid smudging or peeling.
