How To Hang a Mirror on Wallpaper

Hanging a mirror on wallpaper requires a more delicate approach than hanging one on bare drywall. The extra layer of wallpaper introduces the risk of tearing, especially with heavier mirrors. This guide provides a step-by-step process to ensure a secure hanging while preserving the wallpaper's integrity.

1. Assess the Wallpaper and Mirror

Before beginning, evaluate the wallpaper's condition. Look for any loose seams or areas where the paper might be peeling. If the wallpaper is fragile or damaged, extra care will be needed, and patching might be necessary before hanging the mirror. Likewise, assess the mirror's weight. Heavier mirrors require more robust hanging hardware and potentially reinforcement behind the wallpaper.

2. Choose the Right Hanging Hardware

Selecting appropriate hardware is crucial for a secure and damage-free installation. Lightweight mirrors can often be hung using adhesive strips designed specifically for wallpapered surfaces. These strips distribute the weight evenly, minimizing the risk of tearing. For medium-weight mirrors, consider using heavy-duty picture hooks designed for wallpaper. For heavier mirrors, traditional picture hangers with nails or screws offer the most secure option, though they require more care during installation.

3. Locate and Mark the Desired Position

Determine the ideal placement for the mirror. Use a pencil and level to lightly mark the top center point of the desired mirror location on the wallpaper. Measure down from this point to where the hanging hardware will be attached, taking into account the mirror's dimensions and hanging mechanism. Mark these points lightly on the wallpaper.

4. Create a Hanging Point Through the Wallpaper

For methods involving nails or screws, creating a pilot hole is essential to prevent tearing the wallpaper. Instead of drilling directly into the wallpaper, use a sharp utility knife to create a small cross-shaped incision at the marked hanging points. This controlled cut relieves tension and allows the nail or screw to penetrate cleanly without pulling or tearing surrounding paper. Fold back the four wallpaper flaps created by the incision, exposing the wall beneath.

5. Install the Hanging Hardware

If using nails or screws, insert them through the created openings in the wallpaper and into the wall. Ensure the nails or screws are driven in straight and securely. For heavier mirrors, consider using wall anchors to provide additional support. If using adhesive strips, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for application. If using heavy-duty picture hooks for wallpaper, carefully insert the hook through the wallpaper, ensuring the pointed tip engages securely with the wall behind.

6. Carefully Reposition the Wallpaper

If using nails or screws, carefully glue the small wallpaper flaps created earlier back into place using a small amount of wallpaper paste or adhesive. Smooth the flaps down gently with a clean cloth, removing any excess adhesive. Allow the adhesive to dry completely before hanging the mirror.

7. Hang the Mirror and Check Stability

Carefully hang the mirror on the installed hardware. Once the mirror is in place, gently test its stability by applying slight pressure at different points. Ensure the mirror hangs level and does not wobble. If instability is detected, remove the mirror and reevaluate the hanging hardware and wall anchors to ensure appropriate weight capacity.

Following these steps will help ensure a successful installation and prevent damage to the wallpaper, allowing enjoyment of the newly hung mirror.
